SALT Algorithm Steps
Step 1: SORT
SORT
Global sorting - Walk, Wave, or Still
- •Call out: "If you can walk, move to the designated area"
- •Observe for purposeful movement or following commands
- •Identify those who are still/unresponsive
Step 2: ASSESS
ASSESS
Individual assessment of non-ambulatory patients
- •Check breathing
- •Control major hemorrhage
- •Open airway if needed
- •Check for pulse
- •Assess mental status
Step 3: LIFESAVING INTERVENTIONS
LIFESAVING
Perform quick lifesaving interventions
- •Control major hemorrhage
- •Open airway (jaw thrust/chin lift)
- •Chest decompression for tension pneumothorax
- •Auto-injector antidotes
Step 4: TREATMENT/TRANSPORT
TREATMENT
Prioritize for treatment and transport
- •Assign priority category
- •Tag patient appropriately
- •Move to treatment area
- •Document assessment
Assign Priority Category
Select category based on assessment
SALT Mass Casualty Triage
SALT is recommended by the CDC for mass casualty incidents. Key differences from START:
- Allows for limited lifesaving interventions during triage
- Uses 5 categories instead of 4 (adds "Expectant")
- More detailed assessment criteria
- Better pediatric considerations
Remember: Triage is dynamic - reassess patients regularly
